Wedding Wednesday: Wedding Hashtag Edition
Once again it’s Wedding Wednesday! This week we’ll be discussing wedding hashtags. How did they start, and are they even that necessary? While choosing a wedding hashtag requires some major brain storing, especially if you or your partner have interesting last names, it’s usually picked up pretty quickly once decided. That being said this will also be another short and light read.
First, where did wedding hashtags even come from? Upon further research, wedding hashtags originated around the year 2012. First originating with Twitter, and then on to Instagram. In fact, wedding hashtags are so common now that you can ask on any Facebook wedding group to help come up with a hashtag. There are even wedding hashtag generators out there if you look them up.
Wedding hashtags can be helpful after the wedding to find all of the pictures guests may have taken during the wedding, as you can simply type in your wedding hashtag to find all of the pictures taken that night. I feel as though if you have a medium to a large wedding then a wedding hashtag may be a good idea to implement.
I did a wedding hashtag, and maybe only one person actually used it. That being said, learn from my mistake and advertise that that’s what you want your guest to use for pictures. I think it’s also important to know whether your guests are big on picture taking, as not everyone feels that they need to document every moment.
Another good idea to promote using a hashtag for pictures is having a photo booth, or a photo area readily available for guests to take pictures. Having a backdrop or photobooth may encourage guests to take pictures. This would be a good place to also have a sign suggesting to use the hashtag you created.
Overall, I think wedding hashtags are overrated, and often go ignored. While it is fun and quirky to have, it’s not necessarily and certainly not worth the stress if you can’t think of one that you like. Often with wedding hashtags, it’s usually a play on one of the person’s last name. This can be fun or a headache to sort out. I think as time goes on this may be a trend…
